Shih Tzu Rescue
4 Yr OId Rescue Shih Tzu… Still goes in the house when we leave.?
I have had this little guy for about 6 months. He is a great dog. Only 1 problem. When ever I leave the house, whether it is for 5 minutes or for 5 hours, he either pee’s or poops or both. Some background Facts:
1.) He never has an accident in the house when I am home.
2.) He can make it through the night without going.
3.) I crated him, blocked off excess space. He peed and pooped all over himself. Which I was told they wouldn’t do. Wrong.
Currently, I block him off in a hallway with tile floor- leave a potty pad- and just clean it up when I get back (He doesn’t always go on the Pad about 50/50)
I don’t know what else to try.
He’s afraid of being abandoned. He thinks if you have to clean up his mess every time, then you’ll stop leaving him. ASPCA and other dog training sites can help you understand his nervousness. The best thing is to make him understand that you will be back.
>> When you have plenty of time..
Keep him in his crate while you watch TV or do other activities around the house and keep him in a place where he can see you. After a few hours, if he doesn’t mess then give him a treat and send him outside. This will teach him that if he’s good he gets rewarded. Then, when he’s used to this, put him in the crate and go outside for a bit, but check up on him so he knows you’re still home and do the same with the treat then outside. Eventually, he will understand what the crate is for and you can leave him for a few hours alone in the crate.
