Would the behavior characteristic of a dog buying a bone be a synapomorphy?
It reminds me of the way a squirrel hides his nuts. Could this behavioral trait be do to dog naturally being wild, and therefore they also need to store food for the winter?
In other words, why would a dog feel the need to bury a bone?
To look to canine food hoarding look to their closer relatives for comparable behaviors first. It is common across the genera (fox species & wild dog species cache food).

Hiding food is a very common survival behavior in more than mammals. Many vertebrate taxa have some form of food hoarding behavior. Birds stash food as well as mammals. The behavior is common to organisms that also devote parental care in rearing their young by bringing food closer to the young. Even the insect order of hymenoptera like the bee stores food as the first step in caring for their young. Many mammals that provide milk also stash food so the mother does not travel far away often while nursing.
